“He Started It” is also available for check out as a book at the library as well as on OverDrive as an e-book.First things first, I know that by now I should be able to give up on books that I’m not enjoying. “My Lovely Wife” by Samantha Downing is available at the Sterling Public Library and as a digital audiobook on OverDrive. The line between the good guys and the bad guys is blurred and in some cases, nonexistent. Downing has a real talent for writing engrossing books where the reader doesn’t really like any of the characters in the book but still can’t put it down. Her most recent book is “For Your Own Good” and I can’t wait to read it. Downing’s second book is “He Started It” and it has a good spin on the family road trip. Amazon has a pretty good track record of turning books into movies or series. I believe this book has been optioned for film by Amazon and cannot wait to see it translated to film. I guess the couple that kills together stays together is their philosophy.Īs a first time novelist, Samantha Downing really knocks it out of the park. The reader already knows it’s the husband. My Lovely Wife takes the popular genre of domestic thriller and turns it on its head. The recent rash of domestic thrillers have all tried to take the same formula as Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and add something new to it. Or one where he had to leave the body so that he could go and pick up his sick daughter from a sleepover. I have never read a book where the serial killer was concerned with how his actions were affecting his children’s mental health. The combination of an ordinary suburban couple and a serial killer is an interesting fusion. Smith” and “Dexter” and I think it delivers. Because it turns out that Millicent is planning a lot more than he knows. Millicent agrees, but not for the reasons that he thinks. But he wants to be sure they find the right woman. And now Millicent is anxious to find the next victim. It’s planned out and the victim is selected and taken care of. Besides, if they are just defending themselves and their family who can blame them? But the third time? The third time’s the charm. The only thing that maybe sets them apart is what they are doing to spice up their marriage after more than a decade together…serial murder. Like most of America, they might be living just beyond their means, but overall they are the picture perfect family. My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing (Courtesy photo) Rory is fourteen years old and is a budding golf star and thirteen-year-old Jenna seems to be good at everything. He and his wife Millicent have well-paying careers (he’s a tennis pro at the local country club and she’s a successful real estate agent) that allow them and their two children to live in the same affluent community that he grew up in. The unnamed narrator of “My Lovely Wife” has an ideal life.
